About

Built at the rink.

Bifrost Sports is two friends building one app for everyone at the rink.

We’re Justis Gyori and Ben Friedrich, close friends long before we were cofounders, and we split the work by what each of us knows best. Justis knows the rink from the inside: he runs a team, plays goal and has been on the ice since he was 4. Ben knows how to build software that holds up: fifteen years making and testing products that small businesses trust with their books.

It started with a problem a lot of beer league GMs know by heart: a phone full of texts. Justis is the GM of the River Kings, an adult rec and tournament team in Roseville, and he plays on it with four of his brothers and his dad. Every week the RSVPs, the subs and the team fees landed on him, one text at a time. Look around the rink and everyone was doing the same thing on a different tool: the front desk had its system, the league had its site, the refs had their assignments, the scorekeeper had a paper sheet and the team had a group text. None of them shared a schedule.

Justis knew what the rink needed, and Ben knew how to build it. Now we build it together. The front desk, the league, the refs, the scorekeeper and the team all work from the same schedule, so a change made once reaches everyone.

In Norse myth, the Bifröst is the bridge between the realms. Bifrost Sports is the bridge between everyone at the rink: the rink, the league, the officials, the teams, the players and the fans, on one schedule. We built it to bring hockey’s different communities together as one group, and to encourage positive relationships, healthy competition and human growth along the way.

It’s in beta, and one of us answers every note.

The founders.

Justis Gyori

CEO

Justis leads Bifrost Sports as CEO and brings the hockey side of the team: the rinks, the leagues and the people in them.

On the ice: He plays goal for the Reno Ice Raiders, a Senior A team, and he’s the GM of the River Kings, the Roseville rec and tournament team he plays on with four of his brothers and his dad.

Before Bifrost Sports: His dad, from Rimbey, Alberta, had him on the ice at 4. He’s one of 14 kids, and he has spent his whole life running businesses with his family, handling the logistics, the relationships and the marketing. He’s a girl dad.

At Bifrost Sports: he leads our partnerships with rinks and leagues, and he builds the app alongside Ben. He was instrumental in Tower and the hockey rules behind it, across the USA Hockey, NHL, PWHL and NCAA rulebooks, and he built Team HQ, Season XP and Make the Call.

Why it matters to me: I want hockey’s communities working together as one, with positive relationships, healthy competition and human growth.

Ben Friedrich

CTO

Ben leads Bifrost Sports as CTO and brings the building side of the team: the app on iPhone, iPad, Mac and the web, and the servers behind it.

Before Bifrost Sports: Ben spent fifteen years on accounting software for small businesses: ten in quality assurance, then five as a technical product manager. He took more than 50 features from first requirement to release, bill pay among them, and led a money movement product through payment licensing on schedule. Along the way the product grew to tens of thousands of subscribers. Before software, he fought wildfires as a CAL FIRE firefighter. He studied computer science, holds an MBA from McCoy College of Business, and he’s a dad of three.

At Bifrost Sports: he designed the engines under the app, from Tower, which settles every game by the rulebook, to the ones that compute every stat and standing one way everywhere and work out who’s who across leagues and seasons. On top of them he built the season scheduler that catches conflicts before the ice is booked, waivers signed on a phone, and Capture Scoresheet, which turns a photo of a paper scoresheet into the game’s stats.

Why it matters to me: At 15, I watched my dad give my two-year-old brother rescue breaths after a fall, and I promised myself I’d never be a bystander again. That promise made me a firefighter, and firefighting taught me to lead by serving the people in front of me. It’s how I build Bifrost Sports: the GM, the front desk, the scorekeeper and the ref come first, and the app is built around what they need.

How we build.

Every feature on this site carries its status, Available now, In beta or On the roadmap, from one list we keep against the app itself, and a feature behind a switch in the app follows that switch, so the site never promises what the app doesn’t do yet.
